Smokin’ Chambers Barbeque Contest FAQs

Q: Do I have to pay to get in?

A: This year we must charge an entry fee of $2.00 per adult (anyone over 21 years of age)! Each team is supplied

with ten (10) entry tickets with their application fee. Additional tickets may be ordered in advance

for $2.00 ea (tickets at the gate will be $3.00 each)

Q: Are you sanctioned? What about state certification?

A: This is our second year as a KCBS Sanctioned Event. And yes, we are state certified! So all your points

count!

Q: Have you moved the BBQ competition site?

A: Yes!! We are very excited to be able to offer you a brand new, never-before-been-used-for-a-barbequecontest

site! Situated on 80 acres in Hodge Park in Kansas City North, just a few minutes West of Liberty,

Shoal Creek is a village of more than 20 buildings dating from the early 1800s. The museum dedicates itself

to bringing 19th century Missouri to life through special events, tours and reenactments—and now,

through barbeque!!

Q: What about bringing our family, including our dog?

A: Kids and dogs are more than welcome here. Just be sure to keep the four-footed ones on a leash. This place

is incredibly family-friendly! Your kids may even learn a little history while they’re here!! And… there is

a fenced off area where Elk and Bison roam! The kids love it. (And no… there’s no way they can get in or

the animals can get out.)

Q: Are you still a part of the Liberty Fall Festival?

A: Absolutely! We’re just a little off the beaten track now, but the Smokin’ Chambers Barbeque Contest always

has been and still is, proud to be a part of Liberty’s Fall Festival.

Q: Will you be having music...and a beer tent Friday and Saturday nights?

A: We’ll have a terrific band on Friday that will be playing in the beer tent. However, because we’re no

longer right downtown where all the Liberty Fall Festival activity takes place, it’ll be Friday night only.

But, just as in years past, if you’d like to stay over Saturday night, you’re more than welcome. No extra

charge!

Q: Will electricity be available way out here in 19th Century Missouri?

A: Yes! Just as in years past, we’ll have electricity available for a fee. We’ll also have “Generator Hill” for

those who bring their own generators. And there will be porta-potties… both general and those you can

order for your own area. This 19th Century stuff only goes so far!

Q: I’ve never been there. How do I get there?

A: It’s truly easy!! Here is a link to Shoal Creek Associations'  home page:

http://www.kcmo.org/parks.nsf/web/shoal?opendocument

(Just copy that and paste it into your browser.) You’ll see some pictures, an explanation of the

area and directions. However, to be doubly safe, here are directions to the site. (Plus you’ll get

them again when we send you your info about two weeks before the contest.

DIRECTIONS: Take I-35 North to the Liberty Highway 152 exit. Turn left on 152 and go west

approximately 2 miles. Turn right onto Shoal Creek Parkway (stoplight) and immediately left

onto Barry Road down to the entrance of Robert Hodge Park. There will be people to direct you.

Coming from I-435, go north to Highway 152 East. Go 1/2 mile and turn left on Shoal Creek

Parkway (stoplight) and immediately left onto Barry Road down to the entrance of Robert Hodge

Park. There will be people to direct you.

Q: Will you still have the celebrity rib taste-off?

A. Yes. The rib taste-off and the extreme dessert challenge with their incredible prizes, the free bag

of charcoal, team porta-potties available, live music, beer garden. The only change is the site, and

those of you that have been with us in the past are gonna love this new site! Guaranteed!

Q: My company would like to sponsor a team? What’s involved?

A. Check our separate sheet for team sponsors. Your company (or team) name will appear on the

main BBQ Event Banner, your name will be on table tents on all the tables in the beer garden,

you’ll have 10 15-second “advertising” spots during the evening in the beer tent, you’ll receive

20 tickets for your guests. Additional tickets may be ordered in advance for $2.00 each or purchased

at the gate for $3.00 each

Q: Can I park more then one vehicle in my space?

A: Kansas City parks & Recreation would like us to limit the amount of traffic on the access roads

so only one vehicle will be allowed into your space. Once it’s in it must stay in place. Parking

spaces will be available for team vehicles in the parking lot on the second and 3rd tiers.

Q: What if the parking lot is full before my friends arrive Friday Nite?

A: We will be offering a shuttle service between the spill over parking lot down by the band shell

and the team areas. This is a free service.

Q: What kind of prize money is there?

A: Cash payouts are for the first five places of each category with ribbons for the first ten places. Grand

Champion & Reserve Grand Champion also receive trophies. Prizes for the Extreme Dessert Contest

and the Celebrity Rib Contest are donated by our major sponsors. They totaled more than $1,000 last

year! Ask any of our past winners...the prizes are the greatest!
